some of my favorite artists of the last two decades came out of this sub genre, and you can hear its influence everywhere now. what started as a niche sound ended up reshaping a lot of modern rnb and pop music.
putting this list together was honestly harder than most of my rankings. narrowing it down to 10 was impossible, so this became a top 15 instead. even then, there are so many albums i wish i could’ve included. for this list, i tried to highlight different corners of the genre. some records lean closer to classic rnb, others push into electronic, neo-soul, indie, or experimental. i also wanted as much variety as possible, limiting most artists to one album each. the only exception was Frank 🤦♂️
