𓇳 my top 15 2010s rnb albums

part three: the 2010s 💿

finishing off this three part ranking for rnb with the 2010s, a decade where i think it became harder than ever to define. the genre expanded into alternative, electronic, rock, indie, funk, hip hop, and some of the best albums of the decade came from artists pushing against what rnb was supposed to sound like.

this was also the decade where the way i discovered music completely changed. streaming made music more accessible than ever and we could dig through entire catalogs, make playlists and find artists outside of what was being fed to us on the radio or tv. i think that freedom played a huge part in how much my taste expanded during this era too and even onto this page.

looking at these albums together, i love how little they sound like one another. you have the darker, atmospheric side of rnb, neo-soul and funk, trap, electronic production and albums that almost completely blur the lines between genres. it feels like the decade where rnb stopped needing to fit neatly into one box, and i think that’s what made this era so exciting.

getting to sit with this genre for the last few weeks, revisit albums i love and build the playlists took me back to growing up with this music. i’m really happy with where all three rankings landed, and at the end of the day that’s always what i try to lead with, the albums that mean the most to me.
