Erykah Badu & The Alchemist finally dropped their collab album. this is such a perfect pairing, Erykah sounds completely at home over The Alchemist’s production and I love that she was also really hands on with the production herself. they spent 18 months working on the album between Dallas and LA, and you can really hear how much they took their time with it. it’s hazy, soulful and hypnotic while touching on love, identity, womanhood and growth. definitely one i’m going to be spending a lot more time with this year.
Haute & Freddy and Ruby Doll are also back with new singles, both newer artists that have been on my radar this year. after how much I loved ‘Big Disgrace,’ i’ve been excited to hear where H&F go next and this sounds like another really strong step forward. Slayyyter was also the creative director and stylist for Ruby’s music video, which makes so much sense once you see it. you can hear so many different influences in this track too. also highly recommend her album ‘Nostalgia’ from last year!
Turnstile also released a reimagined version of ‘NEVER ENOUGH’ and I love when artists do this. I loved when Paramore did it with ‘This Is Why,’ it just gives the album an entirely different life. I already loved how much Turnstile experimented with genre on the original, so hearing them pull the record apart and rebuild it in completely new ways feels very fitting for them. and that Slayyyter collab is fucking insane.
