𓇳 2017 albums ranked

2016 was such a major turning point for music that you could still feel its impact through 2017. a lot of artists were taking bigger creative risks as a result, genre lines were getting blurred, and the top three albums especially defined the year in completely different ways.

I ranked 57 albums again for this list and narrowing these down was painful. there were so many records from this year that shaped my taste and are still just as exciting to revisit now.

a few albums still sit at the very top for me as perfect records:

Lorde — Melodrama

a coming-of-age album that captures heartbreak, loneliness, growing up, partying, and self destruction in a way that is still unmatched to me. every detail from the songwriting to the production is perfect. easily Lorde’s best album so far.

SZA — Ctrl

Ctrl feels like reading someone’s journal at 2am. the way SZA wrote about insecurity, love, self worth, and growing into yourself makes this album so timeless. Garden is probably my standout I feel like that song really highlights the theme of this album perfectly.

Kendrick Lamar — DAMN.

one of Kendrick’s most accessible albums while still carrying so much depth underneath it. the production, storytelling, themes of morality and ego. people have called it one of his worst albums, but it’s one of those albums that gets better every year for me.

BROCKHAMPTON - SATURATION II

this album always reminds me of fall because of the late summer release. i spent so many days playing this nonstop and it’s still hands down the best album the group ever released. this is probably the least experimental project to get into the group, but each track is jammed packed with a lot of personality, and every member brings something memorable to the table.
