it’s been a few months since the last albums ranked post :m i’ve been taking my time revisiting these albums. so many of these albums hit differently coming back to them now. covid really feels like a fever dream… but we got some good music šŸ˜€

a few highlights from the top of my list:

Fiona Apple / Fetch the Bolt Cutters

there’s nothing else here that sounds even close to this. there are so many different sounds and daring ideas, and i love how unfiltered Fiona is throughout. it’s restless and unpredictable, but every choice feels like it belongs. it can make you feel a wide variety of emotions, and the more time you give it the more details you discover.

Jessie Ware / What’s Your Pleasure?

one of my favorite disco records of the last decade. it sounds gorgeous from start to finish, and i love how much room it gives each song to build and breathe. the album moves through a lot of emotions, but there’s always this warmth running through it. the little electronic details, disco touches, synths and basslines make it sound completely alive.

Phoebe Bridgers / Punisher

such a beautifully written album. Phoebe can make the smallest detail feel devastating, and even the quieter songs have so much going on beneath them. probably the most personal album of 2020 for me. everything feels so close, like she’s letting you in on something she hasn’t said out loud before. her voice and the production are incredible on every track. ā€œI Know the Endā€ is a masterpiece!

Dua Lipa / Future Nostalgia

still one of my favorite dance-pop albums in recent memory. the hooks are insane, the production is so sharp, and it pulls from disco and dance music without losing its own personality. this album was everywhere for a reason.
